Seventy years ago, the United Kingdom found itself in the deadly grip of World War II. Cities lay in darkness, food was rationed, daily treats forgone. The wailing of air raid sirens provided a constant warning of devastating bombs about to drop.

While thousands of our brave troops gave their lives on the battlefields of Europe and Africa, the people of Britain had to make their own sacrifices here on home soil. From miners to munition factory employees, land girls to laboratory workers – individuals the length and breadth of the country took on challenges and made incredible sacrifices to ensure we defeated the enemy.

It’s their stories Jules Hudson is on a mission to uncover.

In each episode, Jules visits a different region of the UK, hearing how ordinary men and women did extraordinary things. On his journey, Jules discovers astonishing stories of sacrifice, bravery and generosity.
